With the rapid growth in cloud computing and Internet, more and more enterprises are deploying cloud applications. As a result, the majority of traffic is shifting from neighboring exchanges to data forwarding to or from cloud. Services such as 4K video, high definition surveillance, online education, and Telepresence conferencing are also developing at an exponential rate, requiring higher bandwidths and lower latency. With the rollout of many national broadband networks and fiber city projects, fiber to the home (FTTH) and fiber to the desk are becoming irreversible trends.

A traditional enterprise LAN involves multi-layer Ethernet switch aggregation, which complicates the network architecture. As a result, network operation and maintenance (O&M) costs are high, and bandwidth and service expansion is hard. PON technologies, however, have been successfully applied to residential networks. The fast worldwide FTTH rollout has stimulated the maturation of PON technologies and reduced the cost. A PON network has a flattened architecture. Such a network is easy to manage and maintain, and has low latency and high bandwidth. These features are consistent with the new requirements on enterprise networks, and POL caters to the promotion and application of PON technologies in enterprise.

Huawei AgilePOL solution covers E2E devices, such as OLT (optical line terminal), ODN (optical distribution network), and ONU (optical network unit). It has the following advantages: mature PON technologies; high reliability with dual backhaul protection and hitless software upgrade; coexist and smooth evolution for 10G PON and 40G PON; independent management for each department through virtualization; smart terminal and open platform that support quick integration of new value-added services.

Why passive optical LAN

Telecom operators have deployed GPON for over a decade, providing tens of millions of residential customers with very high-capacity broadband services. The technology is reliable,robust and proven:

• POL is highly scalable, delivering gigabit speeds and potentially unlimited bandwidth. The same cables and access nodes can be reused as new services are introduced and bandwidth is increased.
• POL can reduce TCO by 47 percent in a single year by providing a single simplified, centrally managed network to support all services.
• POL reduces energy costs because passive equipment does not require power or cooling, and POL reduces cabling costs by replacing bulky copper bundles with fiber.
• POL frees up space on customer premises by eliminating the need for telecom equipment closets on every floor. The passive nature of the network requires fewer racks, switches and patch panels than copper-based Ethernet.
• POL is easy and cost effective to upgrade: Simply insert a new line card in the optical line terminal (OLT), patch the fiber to the port where service is needed and change the optical network terminal (ONT) at the user location.

POL vs traditional LAN

In a traditional Ethernet network, the central computer room needs more equipment, space, power/uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and more heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) controls. Cat 5 and Cat 6 cables run from intermediate distribution frames (IDFs) or risers to the rest of a networked floor. These IDFs need to be finished properly and provided with HVAC and power.

The POL infrastructure is much lighter. Fiber runs from the OLT in the central room throughout the building. Passive splitters can be located anywhere. ONTs are placed at suitable locations to provide Ethernet ports where required.

The MA5800, the multi-service access device, is an 8K ready OLT for the Gigaband era. It employs distributed architecture and supports PON/10G PON/TWDM PON in one platform. The MA5800 aggregates services transmitted over different media, provides an optimal 4K/8K video experience, implements service-based virtualization, and supports smooth evolution to 100G PON.
The MA5800 series is available in three models: MA5800-X17, MA5800-X7, and MA5800-X2. They are applicable in FTTB, FTTC, FTTD, FTTH, and D-CCAP networks.
The MA5800 can meet carriers' demands for Gigaband network with wider coverage, faster broadband, and smarter connectivity. For carriers, the MA5800 can provide superior 4K/8K video services, support the implementation of a smart home and all-optical campus plan, and connect home user, enterprise user, mobile backhaul, and Internet of Things (IoT) services in a unified way. Unified service access can reduce central office (CO) equipment rooms, simplify network architecture, and minimize O&M costs.

Gigabit aggregation of services transmitted over different media:The MA5800 leverages the PON/P2P infrastructure to integrate fiber, copper line, and CATV line networks into one access network with unified architecture. On a unified access network, the MA5800 carries out unified access, aggregation, and management, simplifying the network architecture and O&M.

Optimal 4K/8K video experience:A single MA5800 supports 4K video services for 16 thousand homes and can be upgraded to support 8K video services. It uses distributed caches that provide greater space and smoother video traffic, allowing users to start a 4K/8K video or zap between 4K/8K videos more quickly. The video mean opinion score (VMOS) video probe monitors and diagnoses 4K/8K video quality, guaranteeing a good video experience for users.
Service-based virtualization:The MA5800 can logically partition a physical access network. Specifically, it can allocate multiple virtual OLTs to different services (including home, enterprise, and IoT services) to support carriers' smart operations such as differential multi-service operations and network wholesale to Internet service providers (ISPs), thereby reducing CO equipment rooms and operation costs and encouraging deployment of new services with a better experience.

Distributed architecture:The MA5800 is the first OLT with distributed architecture in the industry. Each MA5800 slot offers non-blocking access to sixteen 10G PON ports and can be upgraded to support 100G PON ports. The MAC address and IP address forwarding capacities can be smoothly expanded without replacing the control board, which protects carriers' investment and allows step-by step investment.
